Team USA SE Regional Qualifier Practice and sessoin 1

After arriving in Brevard, NC for the 2012 Se regional qualifier I was feeling pretty confident about placing well again this year.  I had an extra day to fish as I drove into town a day earlier than my teammates Josh Graffam, Josh Stephens, Pat Weiss, Chris Lee, and Loren Williams, so I had an extra day to fish.  Hoping to get a collective result of fishing the Davidson River, I fished the East Fork of the French Broad river on a rainy Thursday morning/afternoon.  Practice went well for me as I caught near 30 fish in my practice session on various flies.  It really didn't seem to matter what to throw as the fish were sitting exactly where they should have been sitting. I pumped a few stomachs and got a good idea of what the fish were eating and kick seined and flipped over rocks to see what was actually in the stream that might be of some help if I got into a tight spot.







Friday dawned a new day and my the rest of the team had arrived as I was finishing up an evening session on the Davidson  in the practice water behind the shop.  We all got together after dinner Thursday night and formulated a game plan for the next day as well as went over what worked and didn't on the East fork.  We decided to fish the Davidson as it would prove to be the tougher venue and one that we would need to spend the most time figuring out especially after it had been hit several times.  She proved to be a tough adversary, but we all managed to catch some fish and all felt confident about how our sessions would go.  We compared flies and made sure we each knew what to do.





After the draw Friday night, I was feeling really confident about my group and that I could possibly pull out another win.  Things went well the first two sessions as I had 2 placing points going into day two.  I fished the Davidson River Outfitters water directly behind the shop.  I had watched the owner of the BBQ joint next door throw crumbled hush puppies in the water and the massive amount of fish that were extremely spooky swarm the hush puppies like hatchery trout on pellets.  The session was about to start when just about every fish in that section started rising to micro caddis and midges.  I foolishly started fishing for them knowing that they would be extremely spooky.  I only spent 10 minutes fishing to them before giving up and reverting to what I know best.  I found the smallest soft hackles that i had in my box and decided to fish them on an extremely long leader  and decided to wait for a fish to rise and cast above him and swing my fly to him.  This proved to be an excellent way to provoke strikes and after the 3rd missed fish I finally landed my first fish.  I ended up with 8 including several fish from the top part of my beat in the super glassy water. New Venture

I am just now completing a move back to Colorado.   I will now be guiding for Front Range Anglers in Boulder, CO.  I am looking forward to this new venture in my life as well as  building a life with my fiance Jamie.  I will update soon with pictures and results from the SE Regional Team USA qualifier. Thank you to all my friends and family that have supported me in the last few years in pursuing my dreams as a professional fly fisherman.  It means the world to me and I can't say thank you enough.

Practice on NFoW morning session

Here are a few fish from my morning session today.  Fishing was tough for about the first 45 min until the water warmed up a few degrees.  Then it was on like Donkey Kong!

Performance Flies

Check out Kevin Compton's Performance flies.  I get a good majority of my comp tying materials including Dohiku barbless comp hooks.  I was the first person to start fishing these hooks in the US and 99% of my flies are tied on these hooks.  Tell him I sent you. He will hook you up.  He is the only Distributor of some of these materials in America and is for sure the ONLY distributor of Dohiku hooks and Fly D&K products here.

NFoW 1-13-12

So I guess not being employed for the next two months has its benefits.  You see, I have been able to spend more time with my girlfriend (which is a definite plus), but I have also been able to spend more time on the water.  She lives about a 30min drive to either the NFoW and Mammoth spring in Arkansas so I get to pick where I want to fish everyday.  But it has also given me more time to prepare for upcoming comps and the upcoming guide season by prepping gear and flies.  Here are a few fish from my last trip on 1-13-12.  It was a bitterly cold day (16 deg F) and I was only expecting to move 2 or 3 fish, but i ended up with 7 in the 3 hr session I fished.  They definitely made it worthwhile.

Colorado new year

I just got back from a trip to Colorado last week and it was a great way to bring in the new year.  It looks as if I will be moving back sometime in march to start guiding again.  I am looking forward to making this move for the last time. So if any of you  are gonna be heading that way, let me know and maybe I will be able to take you fishing.

Thanks to an amazing girlfriend, who got me a contour+ camera for Christmas, you can expect to see films appearing with my posts along with films from buddies Brian Wise and Kyle Kosovich.

Local Talent

So after some unspoken prodding, my good friend Matt Tucker has encouraged me to start blogging more. So once again I guess I will. You see, I haven't been able to blog to much about fishing because I have been working so much. My hometown was devastated by an EF-5 tornado this may and as a contractor to the electric utility I was extremely busy. Luckily my house wasn't touched by the tornado, but my work warehouse was a complete loss. I have recently met the girl of my dreams (our second date was a trip to the NFoW where she caught her first rainbow ever and first trout on a fly rod. I have also since bought her a pair of waders and boots so she can accompany me on fishing adventures). So back to the main part of my blog...Tucker wanted to showcase some of the local talent we have in the Missouri Ozarks and I figured since he mentioned myself, along with some of my best friends, I ought to start updating my blog some more. So thank you tucker for giving me some motivation to update my blog more often!!
